How we make Galley Wizard

Plain rules for what we publish and what the planner relies on.

Recipes and quantities

Every recipe lists grams per serving for one normal-appetite adult, following standard portion sizes. Diet tags and allergens are worked out from the ingredients, not typed by hand, and checked automatically before every release. Recipes are marked when they haven't been tested in a real galley yet — today that is every recipe in the catalog; we'll mark them as tested crews report back.

Season calendars

“In season” comes from official calendars where they exist, each named on its page (retrieved 2026-10-07):

Elsewhere we use general climate-zone calendars and say so.

Nutrition

Per-serving values come from USDA FoodData Central — SR Legacy (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service), weighted by each ingredient's grams. They are a planning guide, not a label: raw weights, typical products, and a close stand-in where USDA has no entry (marked as approximate).

Numbers in guides

Amounts in our provisioning guides and calculator are what the planner actually buys for the example trip shown — not rules of thumb. We state the example (crew, days, margin) next to every figure.

AI

The planner is not generative: menus and quantities come only from the curated catalog, and the same trip always gives the same plan. AI is used to read a recipe from a photo the chef chooses, and the chef checks the result before it's saved. Any article drafted with AI help is edited and checked by us before it's published.

What we don't claim

Galley Wizard is a planning aid. We don't give medical, dietary or seamanship advice, and we don't guarantee any dish is free of an allergen — see the terms. We don't publish ratings we don't have, and we quote people only with their permission. Found a mistake? Tell us and we'll fix it.
