Make-ahead meals for the first nights of a passage

Updated 2026-10-08

The first nights of a passage are the hardest: everyone is tired, the watch system is new, and seasickness hasn't settled. Dinners cooked and frozen in port turn cooking into reheating.

How to do it

Cook two or three dishes the day before you leave, cool them quickly, freeze them flat in portions and label them. At sea, thaw one in the fridge in the morning and heat it in one pot at night.

Questions

What meals can I make ahead for a sailing passage?

Stews, curries, chilli, pasta sauces and soups freeze well and reheat in one pot — see Galley Wizard's make-ahead recipe collection.
